Andechs Monastery & lake Starnberg
The Andechs Monastery is situated on top of the sacred mountain near the lake Ammersee. It is the oldest place of pilgrimage in Bavaria. Since 1850 the Benedictine Abbey of Saint Bonifaz in Munich is commercializing the production of organic food there. Monasteries have always been spiritual, cultural and economic centres, which had a lively exchange with their surroundings. The monks live and work according to the preface „Ora et labora“ from the rules of Benedict of Nursia (480-547 AC).
After the visit to the monastery our tour leads us to lake Starnberg which we discover by boat. The lake is also known because of the death of King Louis II in 1886. Today there are still a chapel and a wooden cross at the place of the accident. Since 1976 the lake has been a nature reserve of international importance.
